Travel Series:
As we head into travel season, we wanted to give you all some tips on how to put your best foot forward in your destination of choice. We want to hear from you so let us know where you’re going on Facebook!
VISITONS LA FRANCE!
While getting applause for your good behavior may be a pipe dream in the land where pas mal (not bad) is a high compliment, there are several things you can do to avoid a cold stare:
- Always start with Bonjour (before 5pm) or Bonsoir (after 5pm). I cannot stress enough how important it is to start any interaction with a greeting and, before making your request, waiting for the response. It is considered really rude not to. If you are renting an apartment, expect to do the same when you run into your new neighbors in the elevator. A simple au revoir to conclude is also de rigueur. If you want to be super polite, you can throw in a monsieur or madame.
- Parlez-vous anglais? If you don’t get around to learning a bit of French before your voyage, the French do understand but before launching into English, ask! The question should come AFTER you have said your greeting and the person has responded.
