CULTURE CORNER: Spotlight on Brazil

As Brazil gears up for the 2014 World Cup on June 12th (keep track of Brazil's match dates), we wanted to share some insights to this wonderful país (country) ofcaipirinhas, samba and, of course futebol! Whether you are an intrepid soccer fan or planning to visitBrasil in the near future for any reason, now is a great time to start some Portuguese Group Classes or try out our Portuguese Travel Crash Course.

To get you started, here are some dicas (tips) that can help you become more familiar with the Brazilian way:

  • DON'T wear yellow and green together.  Unless you are at a match and rooting for the home team, the color combo of the Brazilian flag is not the best fashion statement.
  • DO expect meals to last long. Lunch itself can last over two hours.
  • DON’T eat pizza with your hands. Use a knife and fork for every meal.
  • DON'T make the "OK" sign with your hand. It's the equivalent of the proverbial bird. Thumbs up should make the point.
